Six Essentials of Successful Management

Supervisors and managers who want to accomplish more can get inspiration from CEOs who had to prove themselves quickly in their new jobs.

In their book, You’re in Charge-Now What? (Crown Business) executive recruiter James Citrin at Spencer Stuart and Associates, Stuart’s U.S. chairman, Thomas Neff, give advice on how to make your own fresh start.

  1. Know your company. Read about the company and its competitors.
  2. Listen more than talk. Evaluate people and customers personally. Don’t just accept information that is passed on to you.
  3. Solve problems. Find out what they are and what you could do about them.
  4. Don’t over promise or try to do too much. Remember that when you make a promise, you are betting that you can do it. Promise a little less than you think you can achieve.
  5. Make sure you have the best possible people on your team. If you hire or retain “B” or “C” players, you are surrounded by mediocrity. Make sure your “A” players know how to work as a member of a team.
  6. Trust yourself. There will be times when you have to make decisions on your own without discussing them with others first.
