Mastering The Marketing ‘Puzzle’

I’ve been rather quiet the past week because I took the last half of last week and the weekend to completely remodel the kitchen in my house.  My wife and I are looking to move within the next few months and we decided it would be a good investment to update the kitchen before we put the house on the market.  As such, we completely redid everything.

We tore out kitchen cabinets, closet doors, and flooring.  We also installed new french doors in place of an old sliding door.  Needless to say, it was a big job.  Basically, it was about 4 full days of sun up to well past sun down work to get it all liveable again.

Fortunately though, I love doing things like that.  I was also able to recruit my parents to come help as well so we had the best kind of labor available - FREE.

On Friday as I was struggling to lay down a new laminate flooring, the similarities between that and marketing really struck me.  You see, in order to get the laminate flooring to look nice with no cracks and limited visible seems, you really had to work at getting every piece to integrate with the other pieces that had been laid previously.  If anything was off, the flooring didn’t look as well as it could or should.

One thing I noticed as well was that if I was careful laying the first few pieces, everything else seemed to integrate quite nicely.  However, if those initial pieces were off even just slightly, it made the rest of the job considerably more difficult.

So how does this relate to marketing your lawn care business?

Well, just as the first few pieces had to be pieced together very carefully, if you’ll spend time putting together a solid marketing plan up front, everything you do afterwards will flow together very nicely.  You’ll have a solid plan in place for achieving the objectives you’d laid out for your business.  You won’t get caught in the traps of ‘throw mud up against the wall’ or ‘flavor-of-the-month’ marketing.

At the end of the day, you’ll find you have a great deal more success with your marketing efforts and you won’t be as frustrated with the hassles and headaches most experience with their marketing.  You may still have a few ‘cracks’ you’ll need to work out as you go along, but the end result will definitely be something you can be proud of.
