What’s With This GoogleTube?

Unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand for the past month or so, you already know that Google agreed to purchase the online video service, YouTube, for $1.65 billion dollars.  Yes, that’s billion with a ‘B’.

Well, the deal officially closed today, so someone over at Google had better start washing dishes, or collecting empty soda cans, or selling newspapers, or something to pay for the deal because YouTube certainly isn’t a cash cow by any means. If you think about it, why in the world would the rocket scientists over at Google plunk down such a huge chunk of change for something that’s never produced one dollar of revenue and has the potential to be a legal headache, what with all the potential copyright infringement suits just waiting to happen?

Well, in my estimation the reason Google’s taken such a huge step is because of the traffic generated by the service.  YouTube was unquestionably the leader in online video and they’d figured out how to make the process of uploading and playing video on the web incredibly easy.  So easy in fact, that I was able to propose to my beautiful wife via a video I uploaded to YouTube (www.SharonandChestin.com)

In any case, even though Google has a ton of work to do to make the deal profitable and capitalize on everything YouTube’s already done, you can bet they have a team of super-smart people figuring out what needs to be done to make money with all those eyeballs.

You see, the most expensive and difficult part of any business is getting the attention of your target market.  You need people that are interested in what you have to pay attention to your marketing message and you’ll spend the bulk of your time and energy in trying to make that happen.  Once you capture their attention and get them into your sales funnel, the costs go down considerably. In the case of GoogleTube, they basically bought a way to get in front of millions of people each and every day.

My question to you is, what are you doing to get the attention of more qualified prospects?
