Off To See The Wizard

It’s hard to believe another week is in the books already. This weekend I’ll be taking my kids to see an outdoor production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The town where my wife’s parents lives does 2 outdoor plays every year and the kids had so much fun at the first one, I figured I couldn’t NOT take them to see this one as well.

Speaking of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, even though it’s a movie geared towards a younger audience it definitely has some messages that us older ‘kids’ need to be reminded of occasionally. I won’t bore you with a recap of the movie (partly because I don’t remember all of it), but there is one thing I’d like to mention about it.

If you’ll recall, as Dorothy and gang are on a journey trying to reach the great wizard of Oz. Each of them believes the wizard will be able to provide them with the one thing they really lack. For Dorothy, she wants to get home. The scarecrow could sure use some brains, the tinman would like a heart, and the lion is in desperate need of some courage.

As I’m sure you already know, they pass through lots of sticky situations, come face to face with the wicked witch of the west (or is it the east?), and eventually make it to the wizard. Of course he sends them away for one more challenge, but ultimately they end up back in front of the wizard.

What they find out is that the wizard is really just a regular guy and that he really doesn’t have all the magical powers they thought he had. Disappointed at this realization, they all worry that their journey was for naught in that they won’t be receiving the thing they each desire most.

However, what the wizard helps them realize is that each of them already has the one thing they desire most, they just hadn’t realized it. The scarecrow was already smart as a whip, he just hadn’t recognized that fact. The tinman realized he didn’t need an actual heart (even though the wizard gave him a stand-in anyway) because he had all the kindness and generosity of a real heart. The lion came to know that he already had the courage he thought he lacked, he just hadn’t ever recognized it before. And Dorothy had her Auntie Em and uncle in her heart the entire time.

So what does this have to do with running a successful lawn care or landscaping business? Well, a lot of times as business owners it’s easy to get frustrated and think we’re missing ‘something’.

“If only I had ‘this’, my business would be so much better” or “I’d be so much more successful”.

I’m here to tell you that you already have it. Whatever you feel you lack in order to build a super-successful business is already inside you. You just need to set aside any fears, concerns, or intimidation you feel. I go through a lot of the same dilemmas, but my business really starting taking off when I realized I really did have what it takes to build a successful business. If I can do it, believe me, you can too.
